Synopsis
Mở đầu/ Prologue:
Sau 19 năm tù đày vì ăn cắp một ổ bánh mì, Jean Valjean được thanh tra Javert trao giấy xác nhận được tự do. Nhưng vết xăm số tù 24601 trên tay vẫn khiến anh trở thành kẻ bị ruồng bỏ. Chỉ có vị Giám mục đối xử tử tế với anh, cho anh thức ăn và nơi ở. Nhưng Valjean, bị đẩy vào tình thế khó khăn, ăn cắp một số đồ bạc và bị cảnh sát bắt. Nhưng thay vì kết tội, Giám mục đã một lần nữa cứu Valjean. Ông khuyên Valjean nên trở thành một người trung thực. After 19 years in prison for stealing one loaf of bread, Jean Valjean, "prisoner 24601,” is released on parole by the warden Javert. Valjean is shunned everywhere and cannot find decent work. Only the kindhearted Bishop offers him food and shelter. Desperate and bitter, Valjean steals the Bishop's silverware, and is once again captured by the police. Rather than denouncing Valjean, the Bishop instead tells the police the silver was a gift, and pleads with Valjean to become a better man. Ashamed and humbled by the Bishop's kindness, Valjean resolves to redeem his past sins and start a new life.
Màn 1/Act 1:
Nhiều năm sau, Jean Valjean thành người có quyền trong xã hội. Một trong những người làm công của anh, Fantine, có một đứa con ngoài giá thú - Cosette. Khi những người phụ nữ khác phát hiện ra điều này, họ đòi đuổi cô. Mất việc, Fantine rất đau khổ khi không còn một đồng nào để nuôi con. Lúc đó, Cosette đang ở tại nhà của vợ chồng chủ nhà trọ Thénardiers. Cô bé bị đối xử tàn nhẫn, trong khi Éponine, con gái riêng của họ, lại được nuông chiều hết mức. Khi Valjean thông báo mẹ của Cosette đã mất và anh sẽ nuôi cô bé, Thénardiers đòi trả toàn bộ chi phí ăn ở trong thời gian Cosette ở đây.

The years go by. Valjean has assumed a new identity as the town Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, a single mother, gives her all to care for her daughter Cosette. One day, a coworker steals a letter from Fantine, revealing that Fantine has an illigitimate child. A fight breaks out. The foreman and other workers use the incident as a pretence to fire Fantine. Desperate for money, Fantine sells her hair and teeth, and turns to prostitution. When she defends herself against an abusive customer, Javert arrives to arrest her. Valjean takes pity on Fantine, and is overcome with guilt when she blames him for her misfortune. He orders Javert to release her.
Soon afterwards, Valjean rescues a man crushed by a runaway cart. Witnessing the scene, Javert takes suspicion. Only Valjean, the fugitive he has been pursing, possessed the strength for such a feat. However, it turns out a man who looks like Valjean has been arrested. Valjean realises that the mistaken identity could free him forever, but is not willing to see an innocent go to prison in his place. He confesses his identity to the court. Javert arrives to take Valjean back into custody, but Valjean asks for time to fetch Cosette. Javert refuses, but Valjean breaks free and escapes.
Exhausted and with a terminal tuberculosis, Fantine dreams of Cosette. Valjean promises to find and protect Cosette. Relieved, Fantine succumbs to her illness and dies.
In the mean time, the Thénardiers, a couple of dishonest innkeepers, forces Cosette to work as their servant all the while extorting money from Fantine, claiming that Cosette is regularly ill, in order to indulge their own daughter Eponine. Valjean meets Cosette while she's on an errand fetching water and offers the Thénardiers a payment to adopt her, but not before the Thénardiers put on a show of concern for Cosette to raise the amount of money. Valjean and Cosette leave.
10 years pass, Cosette is now beautiful young woman. She falls in love with Marius, member of a group of student revolutionaries fiercely resisting the government.
Màn 2/ Act 2:
Éponine, vì yêu Marius, đã tham gia vào đội quân kháng chiến. Lang thang một mình trên đường phố trong nỗi đau khổ vì tình yêu đơn phương, Éponine bất ngờ bị sát hại và tắt thở trong tay của người cô yêu. Còn thanh tra Javert, lúc này đã trở thành gián điệp của chính phủ, tìm cách trà trộn vào đội quân kháng chiến.
Valjean thương Cosette như một người cha ruột. Khi biết được tình yêu lãng mạn của hai người, Valjean đã đi đến chiến hào để tìm Marius. Phát hiện ra Javert là gián điệp, nhưng thay vì hạ sát, anh lại tha cho viên thanh tra.
Cuộc chiến giữa chính phủ và quân kháng chiến diễn ra khốc liệt. Marius, trong một lần tấn công, đã bị thương và bất tỉnh. May mắn thay, Valjean cứu Marius và đưa anh đến bệnh viện. Quân kháng chiến thất thủ!
Trên đường đưa Marius đi cấp cứu, Valjean bị Javert bắt gặp. Anh cầu xin viên thanh tra cho mình thời gian đưa Marius đến bệnh viện. Chợt hiểu ra cuộc sống luôn tồn tại giữa cái tốt và cái xấu, trắng và đen. Là một con người vẫn luôn tin rằng mình đi theo chính nghĩa, đến giờ này, Javert trở nên trống rỗng. Không thắng nổi cuộc chiến nội tâm của bản thân, Javert tự sát.
Marius hồi phục trong sự chăm sóc của Cosette mà không biết ai đã cứu mình. Tình yêu của Marius và Cosette đơm trái bằng đám cưới thật lãng mạn. Nhưng vợ chồng Thénardiers đến phá đám khi nói rằng chính Valjean mới là người cứu sống Marius.
Éponine, now grown, has fallen in love with Marius, who does not return her feelings. She joins the student revolutionaries out of her love. Wandering alone on the streets musing over her unrequited love, Éponine is shot and dies in the hands of her lover. Inspector Javert, now a government spy, tries to infiltrate the rebel group.
Loving Cosette as his own daughter, Valjean volunteers himself to the student barricade to find Marius upon learning of his and Cosette’s feelings for each other. He catches Javert spying on the students, but spares his life.
The tension between the government and the revolutionaries intensifies. In one final confrontation, the Resistance falls. Marius is injured and knocked unconscious, but is saved by Valjean. As Valjean carries Marius to an exit, he finds Javert waiting. Valjean begs Javert for one hour to bring Marius to a doctor, and Javert reluctantly agrees. Javert finds himself unable to reconcile his admiration for Valjean's merciful acts with his conception of Valjean as an irredeemable criminal. Desperately torn between his beliefs and the law, Javert commits suicide.
Marius, wounded but alive, despairs at the death of his friends and laments the futility of their sacrifice. Cosette arrives to comfort him, and they reaffirm their love. Realising that Cosette no longer needs him as a caretaker once she's married, Valjean gives the couple his blessings. Valjean confesses to Marius that he is an escaped convict and must go away because his presence puts Cosette in danger.
A few months later, Marius and Cosette get married. The Thénardiers crash the reception disguised as nobility and attempt to blackmail Marius, but are evicted from the wedding.
Hồi kết/Epilogue
Marius và Cosette trở lại gặp Valjean đúng vào lúc anh đang hấp hối trên giường bệnh. Cũng tại đây, Valjean đã kể cho Cosette toàn bộ sự thật về thân thế của mình.
Sự hy sinh và chuộc tội của Valjean đã được đền đáp. Linh hồn của anh đã được Fantine, Eponine và Giám mục ở thiên đường chào đón.
Marius and Cosette return to meet Valjean as he lays dying. Valjean tells Cosette the truth about her identity. Finally atoning for his sins, Valjean is welcomed to Heaven by Fantine, Éponine and the Bishop.
